A young girl was entrusted by her mother with a purse containing five dimes to buy sugar and butter for Christmas cookies. On her way to the store, she lost three of the dimes in the snow. She prayed to God for help in finding them, then retraced her steps, carefully searching the deep, fresh snow. She successfully found all three dimes, each one visible in the snow as if placed to be discovered.

In Their Own Words

“It was the day before Christmas, and mother had given me five dimes to go to the store and buy sugar and butter for our Christmas cookies. I was a very little girl, and the money seemed a great deal to me. I started off, feeling very important, but when I had gone about three blocks, I put my hand into my pocket to feel if the money was safe, and to my horror, I found that three of the dimes were gone. I was so frightened that I began to cry, but I remembered that mother had told me that if I was ever in trouble I could pray to my Heavenly Father and He would help me. I looked about in every direction to be sure no one was near, then reverently folded my hands, and stood with my bowed head and closed eyes while I whispered the prayer for help in finding my lost dimes. Then I began to retrace my steps. The ground was covered with about four inches of newly fallen snow. As I looked at it I remembered something my grandmother used to say about hunting for a needle in a haystack, but I felt sure I would find my money. Carefully I went back, stepping in my own fresh tracks, looking for my glittering treasure, with the faith of a little child never wavering in my heart. When I had gone about half way home I spied a tiny hole in the snow, and reaching down to its full depth, I found one of my precious dimes. A few yards farther on I found another, and still farther the last one, each as though it had fallen flat on purpose to show me where it lay. I picked them up, and with a heart full of gratitude, I ran back to the store, and then home to mother, who never knew of my loss, but who was very happy when I told her I had bought the things she needed.”
