Korihor, an Anti-Christ, entered the land of Zarahemla to preach against the prophecies of Christ, claiming that believers were bound by the foolish traditions of their fathers and that there was no God, no atonement, and no life after death. He traveled through the lands of Jershon and Gideon, where he was repeatedly bound and taken before high priests and judges, eventually being brought to stand before Alma and the chief judge. Korihor persisted in his blasphemy, ridiculing the church leaders and accusing them of oppressing the people for gain. When challenged by Alma, who testified of God's existence through the witness of the scriptures and all created things, Korihor demanded a sign. Alma warned him that he was already under the influence of the devil and that he should not tempt God. Because Korihor persisted in denying the truth, Alma declared that he would be struck dumb so that he could no longer deceive the people. Korihor was immediately afflicted with loss of speech. He wrote to the chief judge, confessing that he had been deceived by the devil, who had appeared to him as an angel and taught him what to say. Korihor begged for the curse to be removed, but Alma refused, knowing Korihor would return to his deceitful ways. Korihor was cast out, forced to beg for food from house to house. Following a formal proclamation by the chief judge informing the people of this event, those who had followed Korihor’s teachings repented and were converted to the Lord. Korihor later died after being run upon and trodden down by the Zoramites.
In Their Own Words
“I know that I am dumb, for I cannot speak; and I know that nothing save it were the power of God could bring this upon me; yea, and I always knew that there was a God. But behold, the devil hath deceived me; for he appeared unto me in the form of an angel, and said unto me: Go and reclaim this people, for they have all gone astray after an unknown God. And he said unto me: There is no God; yea, and he taught me that which I should say. — Alma 30:52–53, Book of Mormon”
