Elder Joseph W. McMurrin was called to labor in the Edinburgh District while possessing no money for travel or sustenance. However, he records that the Lord opened the way and provided for his needs throughout his seven-month mission there, ensuring he never lacked food or raiment, and consistently left a surplus in his purse, which he attributes to the Lord working upon the hearts of the people he associated with.
In Their Own Words
“I was called to go to Edinburgh, and at the time of my call I had not a single cent of money. I had been working for a living, and had not been able to save anything. I felt, however, that it was my duty to go, and I started to prepare for my mission. I had a great many queer thoughts, and I wondered how I was going to get there, and how I was going to live after I arrived. But I knew that I was engaged in the work of God, and that I had been sent by His servants to publish the glad tidings of the Gospel. I knew, also, that the Lord had promised to provide for the wants of His servants, inasmuch as they would be humble before Him and seek to keep the commandments which had been given. With these thoughts and feelings in my heart I continued to prepare for the change, and while engaged in this way the Lord commenced to show unto me that His promises would not fall to the ground unfulfilled. The way was opened up before me, and the blessings of Heaven were given in abundance. I not only received money to pay my fare, but found, on my arrival in Edinburgh, that I had a capital of fifteen shillings. I remained in that city for seven months, and during the whole of that time I never lacked for food or raiment, and I always had a little money in my purse. I attribute this to the fact that the Lord worked upon the hearts of the people with whom I associated, and they were moved upon to be kind to me.”
