While John M. Horner was a young man, he was visited by the Prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. John M. Horner was eager to speak with the Prophet, but his father insisted he finish a chore of hoeing corn first. Joseph Smith, upon learning of the situation, removed his coat, took a hoe, and helped the young man finish his task. Following this, Joseph Smith baptized and confirmed Horner, and gave him a blessing in which he predicted that the earth would yield abundantly at Brother Horner's behest.
