In the spring of 1834, as Zion's Camp prepared to march from Kirtland, Ohio, to relieve the Saints in Missouri, several of the brethren who had gathered at Kirtland had no means to bear their traveling expenses. Wilford Woodruff, who was present, recorded that when they asked the Prophet Joseph Smith what they should do, 'Brother Joseph said, "I am going to have some money soon"' — and the very next morning he received a letter containing a hundred and fifty dollars, sent to him by Sister Voce of Boston, a woman moved upon to send the funds at the very hour they were needed. Woodruff retold the incident decades later as a simple evidence of the Prophet's living connection with heaven: the means for redeeming Zion arrived on the Prophet's word, exactly when he said it would.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

One evening while Wilford Woodruff, Milton Homes, and sevral of the brotherin were with the Prophet in his house he sayed "I want some money to help fit out Zion and I know that I shall have it." In the morning Brother Joseph Received a letter from Sister Vose of Boston, containing $250. He took the money out of the letter and showed it to the brotherin, present and said, "Did I not tell you last night that I would soon have some money and here it is."

In Their Own Words

“I recollect that in the evening after I got there, several of the brethren came in and talked with brother Joseph, and asked what they should do, for they had not means to bear their expenses from there to Missouri. Brother Joseph said, "I am going to have some money soon;" and the next morning he received a letter containing a hundred and fifty dollars, sent to him by sister Voce, of Boston. I don't know but she is in the congregation today.”
