During the persecution of the Saints in Nauvoo, Brother John Wardrobe, while under threat of mob violence, was able to finish his work on the Nauvoo Temple. With his rifle in one hand, he drove the last nail in the tower. His wife and three children were saved during the conflict, having been found hidden safely in a haystack by a friend.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 52, No. 17, 28 April 1890):
Brother John Wardrobe, who was working on the Temple, was threatened by the mob, but he finished his work, and drove the last nail in the tower with his rifle in one hand. His wife and three children were hidden in a haystack by a friend, and were saved.
