John Stoddard — Miraculous Healing from Mountain Fever
Published August 31, 2026 at 12:12 AM
During the 1861 journey to the Cotton Mission in Southern Utah, John Stoddard became dangerously ill with 'mountain fever.' The account, preserved in family records, describes him as being so weak he could no longer drive his team. His fellow pioneers and family members gathered to exercise their faith. After being administered to by the elders through the laying on of hands, Stoddard experienced a sudden and complete medical reversal. He was able to rise from his wagon and resume his duties immediately, a recovery the family attributed to divine intervention rather than natural healing, allowing them to reach the St. George area safely.
