John E. Forssgren Healed of a Chronic Ailment by His Brother through Faith

In 1850, John E. Forsgren returned to his native Sweden as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon arriving in his hometown of Gävle, he visited his brother, Peter Adolph Forsgren, who was bedridden and suffering from a severe lung attack and physical cramps, with many locals believing he was near death. John administered to his brother using oil and prayer, and Peter was immediately restored to health. The local priest, suspicious of the sudden recovery, doubted that Peter was truly healed and requested a medical examination. The physician, Doctor Nordbald, examined Peter using medical instruments and pronounced him completely well, confirming the miraculous healing. Following this, Peter Forsgren was baptized on July 26, 1850, becoming the first Latter-day Saint convert in both Sweden and all of Scandinavia. John’s sister, Christina, also embraced the gospel shortly thereafter, influenced by a vision she had received previously concerning a messenger who would bring books of scripture. Despite the medical confirmation, John faced persistent opposition from local authorities, eventually leading to his banishment from Sweden in September 1850.
