John Black, an invalid who had been given up by doctors and unable to leave his home for three months, was visited by Elders in Paisley, Scotland. The Saints united in prayer and observed a fast day on December 5, 1891, to enable him to be baptized. He felt strengthened on that day, was baptized, and attended a branch meeting the following Wednesday before passing away on December 13.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 54, No. 1 (4 January 1892), p. 13):

Brother John Black, of the Paisley Branch, who has been an invalid for some time, and given up by the doctors, was baptized on the 5th of December. He had been unable to leave his house for three months, but on the day mentioned he felt so much strengthened that he was able to go to the water and be baptized. He attended the meeting on the following Wednesday, and on the 13th of December he passed away.

In Their Own Words

“Writing from Paisley, Scotland, Brother William Service relates an incident which recently occurred in the branch of the Church at that place. In the latter part of November, Mr. John Black and wife became interested in the Gospel. The husband was an invalid; he had been given up by the doctors, and for three months had not been able to go downstairs. He was visited by the Elders, received their testimony, and desired baptism before he should pass from mortality. As he was not in a physical condition to go to a place where the ordinance could be administered, the members of the Paisley branch united their faith in beseeching the Lord to strengthen him for that purpose, and observed Saturday, December 5, as a fastday. The prayers of the Saints were answered, so that on the date named Mr. Black felt better than he had done for a long time, and he and his wife went and were baptized. The following Wednesday evening he was enabled to attend the branch meeting. On Sunday, December 13, eight days after his baptism, he passed quietly away. — Millennial Star 54:1”
