Jesse Nathaniel Smith — Protection During the Black Hawk War
Published August 31, 2026 at 12:14 AM
During the Black Hawk War in Southern Utah, Jesse Nathaniel Smith served in the local militia to protect the settlements. He recounted a manuscript-sourced instance where he and a small group of men were nearly ambushed by a larger force of hostile Native Americans near Parowan. He felt a sudden, inexplicable warning to halt and change their route. He later discovered that this impression had saved them from a planned attack at a narrow pass, an event he recorded as a divine preservation of his life.
