Jane Winship, previously a resident of Hull who held a negative view of the Latter-day Saints, moved to a small village where she was visited by Elder James L. Shepard. After reading his tracts and the Book of Mormon, she and her daughter became convinced of the truth. They were baptized on September 20th by Elder Shepard. Jane credits the Lord's goodness for leading them to the gospel.

In Their Own Words

“I am desirous of testifying to the goodness of the Lord to me and my daughter. A few years ago I resided in the town of Hull. I had heard of the Latter-day Saints, but the information I received was not of a favorable character. I was told that they taught a false religion, and that they were an ungodly sect. We moved from Hull and took up our abode in a small village. One day we were called upon by Elder James L. Shepard, who left a gospel tract, which I read carefully. It was very plain and simple and made the principles of the gospel quite clear to my understanding. The truths which it contained made a lasting impression upon my mind, and I was delighted when he called again and gave me some more literature, which I also read with much satisfaction. I purchased the Book of Mormon and found that it threw much light upon many principles which are rather obscure in the Bible. My daughter and I, becoming convinced of the truth of the gospel taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were baptized in Hull on the 20th of September, by Elder Shepard.”
