Jane Tolman, suffering from cancer following a surgical operation to remove her breast, was healed through the administration of the priesthood by John Henry Smith and Seymour B. Young at the Afton Stake conference in August 1896. She describes feeling the spirit of the anointing immediately upon the laying on of hands and experiencing perfect health thereafter.
In Their Own Words
“The circumstance which I wish to speak of took place at our last Stake conference, held last August at Afton. I was then suffering considerably, so much so that I could not pay as much attention to the speakers as I should have done, or would have liked to do. I could fully realize that my cancer trouble was not cured, and unless I exercised more faith and unless God would use his power in my behalf there would be no help for me. We were honored at our conference with the presence of our beloved apostle John Henry Smith and Doctor Seymour B. Young. After partaking of the spiritual food, which increased my faith in God, I prayed within myself for God to forgive my unworthiness and increase my faith that I might be healed. At the close of the forenoon meeting of the first day I was impressed to have those brethren administer to me for my trouble. I spoke to Brother Smith and told him my desires to be administered to and the cause of my trouble and the nature of the same. He replied, “Sister Tolman, we will be pleased to bless you.” At the close of the Sunday’s meeting I was anointed with holy oil by Brother Seymour B. Young. As soon as his hands were on my head I felt the spirit of that anointing and knew that God would accept it and answer my prayers. Apostle John Henry Smith was mouth in sealing the anointing and he pronounced the blessings of health upon me. This blessing I have continued to enjoy from that very moment to this time.”
