While visiting a place in Switzerland with Brother G. Bammeli, Jabez Woodard and his companion faced a threat of murder. A group of local people were drinking and turned their violence on each other, resulting in the death of a young man, which provided a diversion that allowed the missionaries to stay in the area and baptize about twenty people.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 20, No. 41, 9 October 1858, p. 653):
Brother G. Bammeli and myself have been threatened with murder, but the Lord has preserved us. A mob had collected, and were drinking, and in their drunken rage they turned their violence upon each other, and one young man was killed, which caused a diversion, and we were enabled to remain in the place and baptize about twenty persons.
In Their Own Words
“Brother G. Bammeli and myself have been threatened with murder, but the Lord has preserved us. A mob had collected, and were drinking, and in their drunken rage they turned their violence upon each other, and one young man was killed, which caused a diversion, and we were enabled to remain in the place and baptize about twenty persons.”
