In 1834, J. B. Noble participated in Zion's Camp to assist in the redemption of Zion. Following the camp's arrival in Clay County, Missouri, a cholera outbreak struck the men with great severity, causing 14 of them to pass away. Noble, who had been assisting in the care of four of the dying men in one room, was subsequently struck by the disease himself. He retreated to the home of Peter Whitmer in the village of Liberty, where he suffered for 40 hours from violent purging, vomiting, and severe cramping that affected his entire body, accompanied by a burning fever in his bowels. During this time, he lost his voice and his hearing. Heber C. Kimball, Brigham Young, Joseph Young, Orson Hyde, Peter Whitmer, and several others gathered to pray for him, forming a ring around him as he lay on the floor. Noble recorded that while they prayed, the veil between him and God became exceptionally thin, leading to an experience akin to an open vision. Strengthened by the faith of his brethren, he felt the blessings of God and was able to rise and dress himself with their help. Within two days, he began the journey back to Ohio, regaining his strength rapidly. Noble credited the recovery to the power of God, noting that Joseph Smith and others had worked to rebuke the destroyer until it was commanded to depart.

In Their Own Words

“I was violently seized with the cholera, puking and purging violently, then cramping from head to foot, in a most powerful manner, with a burning fever in my bowels. In this situation I lay 40 hours. My voice and my hearing had nearly left me. While in this situation Brother Brigham Young and Joseph Young, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, Peter Whitmer, with some three or four more prayed for me. While I was lying on the floor they formed a ring around me. While praying in this situation, the veil seemed very thin between me and my God, and I realized things that I never before thought of. Such were the blessings of God upon me that I nearly had an open vision. I felt the power of God rest upon me, and I arose and dressed myself, and in two days I started for Ohio, and I gained my strength very fast. I know it was the power of God, for Joseph Smith and others had been rebuking the destroyer, and it was commanded to depart.”
