While traveling from Honolulu to Auckland, the steamship experienced two separate failures of the main engine's crank. The second failure, occurring on December 2, 1875, was described as nearly being a very serious affair for the passengers and crew, but through divine providence and the actions of the engineer, they were protected.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 38, No. 9, February 28, 1876, p. 139):
The steamer City of San Francisco, on her trip from Honolulu to Auckland, had the misfortune to break her main engine crank twice. The first break occurred on the 22nd of November, and the second on the 2nd of December. The latter break came near being a very serious affair, but, through the protecting care and tender mercies of our Heavenly Father, and the calm and wise conduct of the chief engineer, the damage to the steamer was slight, but the fright to passengers and crew for a few moments was considerable.
In Their Own Words
