While serving a mission in the Eastern States in late 1845, Isaac C. Haight recorded instances of being prompted by the Holy Ghost to adjust his travels. On one specific occasion, he felt a strong, unexplained impression to leave a particular area where he had been preaching. He later felt this prompting had protected him from rising mob sentiment and potential violence following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. His missionary journals note these 'whisperings of the Spirit' as a constant source of protection and direction during his service.
