Two brothers, Sam and Joe Hurst, were traveling to St. George due to their mother's illness. They slept in a room near their mother, and around midnight, she entered their room and tucked them into bed, patting their heads and smoothing the bedclothes as she did when they were children. She believed they were asleep, but the brothers were awake and deeply moved by her maternal manifestation.

In Their Own Words

“Along about midnight, or a little after, I heard mother come into our room. She came straight to the bed so softly, and tucked us up, and smoothed down the bedclothes over our great, rough limbs, like she used to when we were little fellows. I held my breath all I could and pretended I was asleep; then she put her hand on each of our heads, to be sure we were there, I suppose. She patted Sam's head, for he was her favorite, then walked out as quietly as she came in. I knew Sam was a-blubbering, like a baby; but he tells that I was. We didn't speak for some time, but when we did 'God bless her' came from both our throats at once. We were on our way to St. George, and mother was very ill, and we were anxious to get there, but we did not know that she had passed away at that very hour, and that her spirit had come to see us, and to give us that last motherly blessing.”

— Joe Hurst, as recounted in The Young Woman's Journal
