During the Black Hawk War in the mid-1860s, Henry Judson McCullough served as a guard and scout to protect the settlements in Millard County. On one particular occasion while traveling near Fillmore, Utah, he received a sudden and powerful spiritual impression—a prompting of the Holy Ghost—to immediately stop and change his intended course. He heeded the warning without hesitation. It was later discovered that a group of hostile warriors had established an ambush at a point further along his original path. The manuscript history by Eleanor Watson records this event as a distinct instance of divine protection that preserved his life during the volatile era of early Utah colonization.
