A young girl in Bolton, England, accidentally drank carbolic acid from a bottle. She was taken to two different doctors, one of whom deemed his assistance useless as she was dying. She was eventually taken to an infirmary where three eminent physicians worked on her for three hours, eventually giving up and declaring she was almost dead, with her eyes covered by a white skin indicating death had occurred. A man entered the room with consecrated oil, and the girl was anointed according to the revelations of Joseph Smith. The man prayed over her, and she subsequently sat up and asked to be taken home, leaving the doctors and staff in complete surprise.

In Their Own Words

“Let us give you one instance out of the many hundreds that transpire in our day, of a girl who accidentally drank carbolic acid from a bottle which was formerly used for raisin wine. The effects of this soon laid her prostrate; as one teaspoonful would kill a man. She was then taken to Dr. M———, and it was not long before he told her father that his assistance was useless, as the girl was dying. She was then taken to a Dr. G——, and from him to the infirmary. Three of the most eminent physicians in the town were attending her, and after working with her for three full hours they pitched their stomach-pump and instruments on the floor, and said that they understood their business well enough, and it was useless to waste any more time as the girl was almost dead. They struck matches and passed them in front of her eyes, as a proof that the attraction had left them, for they were covered by a thin, white skin, and it was evident that the spirit which enlighteneth every one that cometh into this world had taken its flight to the spirit world, for death was resting upon her. But after all their decisions, and when all their medical ingenuity had failed and come to naught, there was one in that room who had faith in the power of God; and he had faith that if he would ask his heavenly Father that life would be answered. Just at this moment a man came in with some consecrated oil, which was received with gladness. The girl was anointed according to the advice of the Savior and according to the revelations to Joseph Smith. He bent on his knees and mustered all the faith that he could, and with his hands lifted up towards high heaven he prayed that she might be healed. To make a long story short, the lifeless body moved and she sat up, and wished to be taken home to her mother. Surprise took possession of every one, patients, servants and doctors, and one was overheard to say: It is not the doctors that have done this. — Millennial Star 48:29”
