William Garrett had been bedridden for nearly four months with rheumatic fever. When visited by Elder Thomas Waddoups, Garrett was convinced he would not recover. Elder Waddoups promised him that if he were baptized, he would be blessed. Upon being baptized and emerging from the water, Garrett reported his pain was completely gone, and he was able to use his arms freely, remaining pain-free three weeks later.

In Their Own Words

“I have baptized and confirmed twelve new members to the Church, one of them was a man by the name of Wm. Garrett, who had been prostrated for nearly four months with rheumatic fever. I was asked by his friends to go and pay him a visit, which I did, and found him laboring under the impression that he would never get any better. I introduced the Gospel to him, and told him the benefits to be derived by rendering obedience to its laws and ordinances, and after talking with him on several occasions, he said he believed what I had told him to be true, and as soon as he got well enough he would be baptized. I told him, however, not to wait to get well, but go down into the water, and promised him that he should be blessed by so doing, and he said he would. I took him down to the water and baptized him, and as soon as he came out on to the bank he threw up his arms and exclaimed, “Thank God, my rheumatics are gone!” Before this he could scarcely raise his hand to his mouth, but now he could throw them right up. All the Saints present felt to thank God in his behalf. I saw him three weeks later, and he told me that he had not felt a bit of pain since he came out of the water.”
