During an Atlantic voyage from New York to Norfolk on the steamship Nevada, the weather was exceptionally rough, causing injuries to passengers. An aged lady, Mrs. Wesson, was thrown across the dining room, resulting in severe bruising. A young sister also suffered an injury, cutting her finger while protecting her face. The account notes the extreme nature of the storm compared to typical travel conditions.

“Our voyage from New York to Norfolk, Va., was a very rough one, so rough that dishes were thrown from the table to the floor. One of our company, an aged lady, Mrs. Wesson, was dashed across the dining room with the result that her face was bruised considerably. A young sister had a similar experience; by putting her hand up to protect her face, one of her fingers got badly cut. Men who have traveled that route for ten years say they never knew of such a storm; passengers dared not go on deck to their berths. We arrived at Norfolk on the 19th, all feeling thankful to the Lord for our preservation. We were met at the wharf by Elder Jos. J. Golightly, who kindly assisted us in getting our baggage through the custom house. We took the train for the West, and arrived at our destination in safety, feeling that the Lord had been with us and protected us from the dangers of the deep.”
