On October 7, 1872, in the Leigh branch, the 14-year-old son of Brother Lewis Davis was severely injured while working in a coal pit. He was caught between coal wagons and the side of the pit, resulting in two broken ribs, other internal injuries, and flesh torn from his leg, breast, and shoulder. By the next morning, he was suffering greatly. His father administered to him, after which the pain left immediately and the boy fell asleep. Following the prayers of the Saints, the boy recovered nicely and was sitting up within a week. The healing was considered miraculous by both members and non-members.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 34, No. 44, October 29, 1872, p. 701):

On the 7th of October, a son of Brother Lewis Davis, of the Leigh Branch, aged 14 years, met with a severe accident in a coal pit. He was caught between two coal wagons and the side of the pit, and had two of his ribs broken, and was otherwise severely injured, the flesh being torn from his leg, breast, and shoulder. He suffered great pain until the next morning, when his father administered to him, after which the pain left him immediately, and he fell into a quiet sleep. Through the prayers of the Saints, and the blessing of the Lord, he has recovered so far as to be able to sit up, and is doing well. The circumstance has been a subject of remark among the people in the neighborhood, both Saints and strangers, as a miraculous case of healing.

In Their Own Words

“A serious accident occurred in this Branch on the 7th inst. A son of brother Lewis Davis, aged 14, while working in a coal pit, was caught between the coal wagons and the side of the pit; two of his ribs were broken and others were injured ; the flesh was torn from his leg, breast and shoulder. The next morning his sufferings were very great. His father was called to administer to him, which he did, and the pain immediately left him and he fell asleep at once. He also requested the Saints to pray for him in their meetings; they have done so, the Lord has heard their petitions, and he is now progressing nicely, being able to sit up, and has been for nearly a week. His recovery is looked upon as miraculous both by those in and out of the Church.— Millennial Star 34:44”
