The 16-year-old son of Brother Bardsley of the Manchester branch had been blind for months following a severe cold in January 1881. After receiving medical treatment at the Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester until March 1881 without success, he was taken to the Conference House in Manchester. President Smith administered to him, and three days later, the boy announced he could see.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 43, No. 48 (28 November 1881)):
The son of Brother Bardsley, of the Manchester branch, aged 16, became afflicted in January, with a severe cold. He was taken to the Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester, in March of that year, and after medical treatment at that institution till the beginning of March 1881, he was still blind, and at the request of his father returned home. He was then taken to the Conference House in Manchester, where President Smith administered to him the ordinance for the sick. Concerning this, and the beneficial result brother Bardsley writes: 'Brother Smith, anointed him with oil, and, invoked the blessing of the Lord for the restoration of his eye-sight, and in three days after he said to his father, Father, I can see.' He took a book and read forevermore. Amen.
