After being pelted with rocks and shot at by a mob earlier in the month, Elder F. J. Sorensen and Elder W. L. Battie learned that Sister Fillers was sick as a result of that previous mobbing. Despite the danger, they visited her home to assist her, which led to another violent attack by a mob.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
On the morning of May 9th, Elders Battie and Sorensen, wishing to visit Brother W. L. Fillers and wife—the latter being sick, due to the mobbing of a week previous, started for their home, through the woods. They had not intended to go into the neighborhood after the treatment they received, but meeting Brother Fillers going to the mill, and being told that his wife was very sick, they concluded to go and see if they could not be of some use. They found the sister in a very critical condition, suffering from a high fever and severe pains. The Elders administered to her, and she was almost instantly relieved, and in a few minutes was able to sit up and talk with them. She expressed her gratitude to the Lord for the blessing she had received.
