While traveling to a meeting in Swinton, the narrator was asked by Sister Chapman's son if the Elders could help his sister, who was ill with inflammation of the lungs and dying. The narrator went to the house, prayed, and laid hands on the child, who recovered immediately.

In Their Own Words

“The writer was in company with Brothers Allan, Steed and Attley (on our way to meeting in Swinton), I called at the house of Sister Chapman, in Pendlebury, when her son, who is not in the Church, came in, and in a low tone asked his mother if she thought the Elders could do his little girl any good. She had been lying for some time dangerously ill of inflammation of the lungs, and now they were expecting her to die; in fact, the seal of death seemed to be upon her; eyes were set, and her lips and face were colored by the pallor of death. In reply to her question, Sister Chapman said she thought it no use, as the child was too far gone. Turning around to her, with a few sharp words I told her I had more faith than she had, and according to his faith she should be healed. Getting up and asking the brethren to come with me, we went to her son's house, where a few of the neighbors were assembled. For minutes I talked to the people on the principles of the Gospel, and of the power of God, and poured out our souls in humble prayer to God, asking Him to restore the child. After prayer, we laid our hands on the child, Brother Allan being mouth, and immediately the child recovered.”
