Mrs. Martin and her baby had been sick for several months following the birth of the child, with Mrs. Martin being confined to her bed for six months. When Mormon Elders visited, they administered to them in the name of the Lord. Following this administration, Mrs. Martin was healed, evidenced by her ability to attend her husband's baptism two days later and continue to improve until she was well. She later lost her faith and was again afflicted, losing the use of her limbs.
In Their Own Words
“My wife and baby are both very low, having been sick for several months. I do wish you would come to my house and heal them.—Yes,—answered the Elders;—we will come and administer to them in the name of the Lord, and if you have faith your sick shall be healed.—About one hundred yards from Mingo Creek, a slow running stream of the prairie, in the western part of the Cherokee Nation, was a board shanty, one small room, bare walls, no carpet on the floor, ventilation and light only admitted through the open door; on a bed was the poor, sick mother; by the bedside in a cradle was the skeleton of a babe. Mrs. Martin had been confined to her bed six months, ever since the birth of her child. The prayer of faith availeth much. Next day Sister Martin witnessed the baptism of her husband, and ate dinner with the Elders. Sunday, two days later, she walked to the stream and was baptized. She ate supper, and continued to improve until she became an example of health. But, alas! she lost her faith, and the adversary took advantage of her condition, and she was again afflicted, losing the use of her limbs, and is now a cripple, a warning to all who turn from the truth.”
