An infant child of Mr. Elliott in South Bermondsey, thirteen months old, was near death with a film over its brain and emaciated to the point of being a skeleton. After traditional medical treatment failed, President Joseph A. West and Bishop O. F. Whitney administered to the child. Later, Elder Ephraim H. Nye and President West administered again. The child subsequently recovered completely and became a healthy, rosy-cheeked child. The mother later claimed it was due to her nursing, but the father acknowledged the miraculous nature of the recovery.

In Their Own Words

“Last spring there was a Mr. Elliott living in South Bermondsey, who had a large family. His infant child, 13 months old, had for many weeks been reduced to the veriest skeleton. The physician who had the case in hand, said that the child had a film growing over the brain, and that it was impossible for it to live. The parents were in great distress, and the mother, who is a member of the Church, had faith that the Lord could heal her child. Accordingly, on the 6th of June, Mr. Elliott sent for President Joseph A. West and Bishop O. F. Whitney to go to his house and administer to the poor little sufferer. They went and did so, and about three days later President West and I again administered to it. The mother uncovered it, that we might see its emaciated body. The sight was painful to look upon; it was nothing but skin and bone, and its eyes were set in its head, and it seemed to be in the very throes of death. We laid our hands upon it, and rebuked the disease and the power of the destroyer, and prayed for its recovery. The child began to recover from that time, and as soon as nature, by its recuperative process, could place flesh upon its little frame, it became a healthy, rosy-cheeked, beautiful child. The mother, in her joy, attributed the recovery to her own nursing, but the father, who is not a member of the Church, acknowledged that it was the power of God that saved the child, for he knew that the physician had given it up to die.”
