Henry Heinle's mother, residing in Germany, became dangerously ill, lost her reason, and was placed in an asylum where she was fed artificially and reduced to a skeleton. Henry fasted, prayed, and requested prayers at the Salt Lake Temple. He visited her, anointed her with oil, and rebuked an evil spirit in the name of Jesus Christ. Following his departure, she recovered, regained her health, and was able to return to her household duties.
In Their Own Words
“I reached there the day after Christmas, and the news which I received almost broke my heart—my mother had lost her reason and was in an asylum, where she was being fed artificially. I found her reduced almost to a skeleton. She was afraid of me. I perceived that she was possessed of an evil spirit. I asked permission of the doctors to take her home. They told me it was impossible, that she was a raving maniac and would never recover. I told them I would take the responsibility. They finally consented, and I took her to my sister's house. I offered up a fervent prayer to the Lord for her; then I anointed her with oil and rebuked the evil spirit in the name of Jesus Christ, and blessed my mother. I had to return to my field of labor in Dublin. The first letter I received on my return to Dublin brought me the good news that mother was getting well. I am thankful that I am able to say that for the past year she has been able to attend to her household duties.”
