The wife of Brother Swift was extremely ill and doctors had despaired of saving her life. She told her husband that if he wished for her to get well, he should be baptized immediately. He complied, was baptized by his father-in-law, Elder Brightman, and from the moment of his baptism, his wife began to recover.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 60, No. 29, 21 July 1898):

The wife of Brother Swift was extremely ill and doctors had despaired of saving her life. She told her husband that if he wished for her to get well, he should be baptized immediately. He complied, was baptized by his father-in-law, Elder Brightman, and from the moment of his baptism, his wife began to recover.

In Their Own Words

“At one time prior to Brother Swift joining the Church, his wife was very sick; so bad that they had despaired of saving her life. One night whilst he was standing by the bedside of his sick partner and waiting on her, she looked at him and said, 'John, if you want me to get well you go and be baptized right away and I will fight against that principle no longer, and I believe I will get better.' He complied with her request and his father-in-law, Elder Brightman took him out in the middle of the night because there was much water there and from the very moment that he was baptized his wife started to mend and is now well. — Millennial Star 60:29”
