Brother Horace Bennington of Hull was stricken with pneumonia on April 20, 1902, reaching a near-death state with hemorrhaging and unconsciousness. After a first administration by local Elders that lacked a full assurance of success, his condition worsened. A second administration by three Elders, accompanied by the prayerful faith of his family, resulted in his immediate and complete recovery within a few days.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64, No. 38, September 18, 1902, page 595):
Another case of healing that occurred recently was that of Brother Horace Bennington of Hull. On April 20, 1902, Brother Bennington was stricken with pneumonia. He was under a doctor's care from the first, but the malady developed so rapidly that in three days he was partially unconscious, and a hemorrhage of the lungs set in. The doctor gave no hope of recovery, and the family were told that he could not live through the night. The Elders were sent for, and they administered to him, but they did not feel that the time had come for the Lord to raise him up, and he continued to sink. The following day he was still worse, and it seemed that the seal of death was upon the sufferer's face. Members of the family gathered in the sick-room and united their faith with that of the servants of the Lord. The sacred ordinances of anointing and administration were performed humbly by the Elders, each of whom felt that the power of the Lord was in the house, and that all would be well. Indeed, a promise to that effect was given in the confirming prayer. The results were immediate and marvelous to the Saints in Hull. It was marvelous. From the moment that the disease was rebuked a change was apparent. Before the Elders left the bedside the sick brother conversed rationally with them. His breathing became easier, and so rapidly did the healing power of the Spirit of the Lord do its work that in a few days he was up and around the house. Not one relapse occurred, and in a very short time he was able to resume his usual duties.
