While preaching in Lafayette, Louisiana, a mob attempted to attack Harrison Sagers with tar and feathers, but he was successfully hidden and surrounded by the ladies in the congregation, allowing him to walk out through the middle of the mob unnoticed by his attackers.

In Their Own Words

“I have been preaching in Lafayette, and have had large congregations; but the devil is busy, and the mob is raging. On Sunday last, they came to the house where I was preaching, with tar and feathers, and other instruments of cruelty, determined to put them on to me; but in this they were mistaken, for they were outwitted by the ladies who gathered around me like bold soldiers, and when they were permitted to withdraw, I walked out in the midst of them, and the mob knew it not, until I was out of their reach. They have since been to the house where I board, and have broken the windows, and done other damage, but I am still in the land of the living, and the work of the Lord is rolling on.”
