Hannah T. King, a wealthy English convert to the Church, faced extreme poverty after emigrating to Utah in 1853. Despite her background in the comfortable middle class, her transition to the arid Utah territory brought hardship, including the loss of her father’s legacy and personal sacrifices for her faith. By the famine year of 1856, King’s financial situation was dire; she recorded that on her birthday, March 16, 1856, she lacked both supper and breakfast due to having no flour. On April 14, 1856, she donated the remainder of her inheritance from her father to the Church. Brigham Young, who maintained a supportive friendship with her, provided practical relief during this time. In June 1856, he sent her 30 lbs of flour via his daughter, Alice. In 1860, Young again intervened when she struggled to pay her tax bills, demonstrating the ongoing care the Church leadership extended to her. King viewed these acts as divine answers to her prayers, noting that despite her trials, she felt God had surrounded her with the truest friendships.

In Their Own Words

“The Early part of this month (June 1856) B r Young sent me 30 lbs of flour by his daughter Alice . . . she came lugging it in saying ‘Father had sent it.’ — Hannah Tapfield King journal, as cited in '“As a Bird Sings”: Hannah Tapfield King, Poetess and Pioneer', BYU Studies 51:3, p. 116”
