Grace A. Jolliffe of Portsmouth paid tithing even though it was a financial sacrifice. Shortly after, her two sons contracted diphtheria and were hospitalized. Because she had kept the commandment of tithing, she received an assurance that her children would recover. They were restored to health while many others in the hospital perished.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

Grace A. Jolliffe of Portsmouth writes: 'I feel I must bear my testimony to the goodness of the Lord to us. We have been members of the Church for about two years, and have tried to live our religion. We have always paid our tithing, although it has been a sacrifice to do so. Shortly after that our two boys were stricken down with diphtheria and were taken to the infectious hospital. Words cannot tell of our Heavenly Father's goodness in the manner in which He sustained and comforted us in that hour of trouble. He gave us an assurance that our children would be restored to us again because we had striven in our humble way to keep His commandments. Parents will understand with what feelings of joy and thankfulness we received our darlings back again, especially as many other dear parents were bereaved at the same time. We know that the Lord hears and answers the prayers of His children, and that He blesses those who keep His commandments.'

In Their Own Words

“Shortly after that our two boys were stricken clown with diphtheria and were taken to the infectious hospital. Words cannot tell of our Heavenly Eather's goodness in the manner in which He sustained and comforted us in that hour of trouble. He gave us an assurance that our children would be restored to us again because we had striven in our humble way to keep His commandments. Parents will understand with what feelings of joy and thankfulness we received our darlings back again, especially as many other dear parents were bereaved at the same time. — Millennial Star 69:38”
