During an air raid, Brother George P. Long's house was destroyed; the roof was blown off, the ceiling fell, and windows were shattered. While sitting by the fire, he was cut under the eye by glass, and his granddaughter was cut on the cheek, but the rest of the family survived. Neighbors on either side and across the street were killed. Brother Long attributed his family's survival to divine protection, stating that his payment of tithing and adherence to the Word of Wisdom brought him promises of safety.
In Their Own Words
“The only one who suffered through the air raid was Brother George P. Long. His house was demolished: The roof was blown off, the ceiling fell down, and the windows were shattered. He was seated by the are and was cut under the eye, not seriously, by a piece of flying glass. His granddaughter, who was staying with him, was also cut on the cheek, but the rest of the family came out of the wreck unhurt. Some on either side of them, and across the street, were killed. They believe they received special protection, despite what came to them, in the fact that they were spared while others were killed, or maimed for life. Brother Long said tome: 'Brother McKay, it pays to serve God. I have always paid my tithing and kept the Word of Wisdom, and these are commandments with promises. I shall never be killed by bombs.' — Millennial Star 79:45”
