While serving in the front line trenches, George C. Jameson, a Latter-day Saint soldier, experienced a miraculous escape from an enemy shell. A shell burst over his bay, killing four men and wounding four others, yet he remained unhurt. Shortly after the shelling, a fellow soldier who had previously persecuted him found a Book of Mormon on the ground and carefully placed it in Jameson's pack.

In Their Own Words

“Well, we went into the trenches that night, and in the morning the enemy shelled our position in a furious manner. One shell burst right over our bay, killing four and wounding four. I escaped unhurt, for which I praise my Father in heaven. But the man with whom I had the conversation the night before lost his life. Perhaps by now he knows that the words I spoke to him were true. After the shelling was over, we received orders to clean up the trench, and while doing so, one man came across the Book of Mormon lying on the ground. He picked it up, and very carefully placed it in my pack. This man has been in the habit of persecuting me. Now, how do you account for this change? — Millennial Star 78:24”
