A cultured gentleman recounted that twelve years prior, the philosopher Friedrich Froebel appeared to him in a vision and asked for the sacraments of the dead to be performed on his behalf. The gentleman subsequently went to the Temple and performed the rites in Froebel's name.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66, No. 27, 7 July 1904, p. 426):

Twelve years ago, Friedrich Froebel, the great educator, appeared to me in a vision and asked me to perform the work for him in the Temple. I did so, and I felt that he was satisfied.

In Their Own Words

“A very interesting and cultured gentleman told me that the writings of Froebel, which I was trying to expound, had affected him when he read them as no other books ever had; and he said that about twelve years ago Froebel appeared to him in a vision, and asked him to have the sacraments of the dead performed for him. He went to the Temple and personated Froebel, and received the sacraments of the Church in Froebel's name. — Millennial Star 66:27”
