While traveling on a desert, a group of men, including the author and an Indian, were nearly famished for water. The Indian, who was as ignorant of the local country as the white men, performed chants and incantations during the night. The next morning, he led the party to a sparkling stream, having found water through what the author describes as inspiration.
In Their Own Words
“For instance on one occasion, I with others was on a desert. We were all ignorant of the features of the country and we were nearly famished for water. It was night, the one Indian in our company knew no more of the country than I did. He and a white man who was well acquainted with Indian life, ways and customs, fell behind the other members of the party in the fore part of the night. During that time the Indian went through incantations and sang some chants peculiar to the tribe; after which he said to us in a cheerful mood, “I have found water, good water—way up in the mountain—we all have water, come morning.“ And sure enough just before day he found water. He wandered off by himself, found the water and returned and led us to a sparkling stream. I have often thought of this incident and wondered if it was not a manifestation of the power of God, given through the faith of that Indian, for he was a man of faith in his way, and he believed in the Great Spirit, and he believed that the Great Spirit would hear him and answer his prayers.”
