Following the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857, Rachel J. Hamblin, wife of Jacob Hamblin, provided essential care and humanitarian aid to the survivors of the Fancher Party who were brought to the Hamblin ranch. Her actions are noted as a significant act of mercy and moral courage during a period of extreme regional tension.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in Mountain Meadows Massacre (MormonThink) and Jacob Hamblin | History to Go):
Hamblin told Forney that 15 of the survivors were living near his ranch with white families. With considerable effort, Hamblin claimed, the children had been “recovered, bought and otherwise, from the Indians.” Forney hoped to go south in a month to recover the children, but he put off the job for almost a year, although he did tell Hamblin to collect the children. “You will be well compensated for all the trouble you and Mrs. Hamblin will have,” Forney promised. Hamblin had found 15 of the orphans by December 1858... His wife Rachel helped care for the massacre survivors at the ranch.
