Elder Joseph Eckersley and another Elder were called to assist a young woman in Utah tormented by an evil spirit. During a direct verbal exchange with the entity, the Elders rebuked it by the authority of the priesthood. The spirit departed, and the woman was never troubled by it again.
In Their Own Words
“About eight years ago the writer and another Elder were called to see a young woman who was tormented by an evil spirit. She was in a state of great excitement, and it required the strength of several persons to keep her in bed. Going up to the bedside the writer said: 'What are you doing here?' The reply came in a voice that was not the woman's: 'I came on my Master's business.' 'Who is your master?' the writer enquired. 'Jesus of Nazareth.' As these words were pronounced, the form rolled away, and the woman was left in a state of collapse. We then anointed her with oil and in the name of Jesus Christ and by the authority of the holy priesthood we rebuked the power of Satan, commanding the evil spirit to depart and not to return. Instantly the sufferer was relieved, and she fell into a peaceful sleep. From that time on she was never troubled by the powers of darkness.”
