Phillip Seix, a member who suffered from a natural inclination to depression, was repeatedly plagued by evil spirits after a period of spiritual neglect. On multiple occasions, Elders W. Phillips and A. Evans and other brethren administered the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith to rebuke the spirits. Each time, Seix was restored to his full reason and physical health. Despite warnings that he would be possessed again if he returned to his former environment, he persisted in returning to a home where he was pressured by others to abandon his religion. Following this agitation, he would fall into violent behavior and be possessed until Elders were able to return to provide further deliverance. Ultimately, due to his inability to resist these influences and his continuing neglect, he was excommunicated.

In Their Own Words

“According to the commandments of Jesus Christ in such a circumstance (see Mark xvi, 18, &c.), they rebuked that evil spirit from him by the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith, and God heard their prayer and restored the afflicted to his former senses. ... Finally, Elders W. Phillips, together with A. Evans, visited him, and through their administrations of the above ordinances, he was restored to the possession of his full reason... While in this situation, W. Phillips visited him again, and in a few minutes, he was restored to his reason and was as good as ever. — Prophwyd y Jubili (Prophet of the Jubilee), March, 1848 (English translation by Ronald D. Dennis)”
