Ethan Barrows Jr., an infant, was the son of Latter-day Saint convert Ethan Barrows. While biographical records have historically conflated the infant with his father, it is documented that the child died in Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri, during the summer of 1838. According to the obituary published in the August 1838 issue of the 'Elders' Journal,' the child passed away on August 15, 1838; however, his father's later autobiography provides the date of his death as August 18, 1838. The infant lived for a span of 5 months and 9 days. This death occurred during a period of significant migration and settlement for the Church in Missouri, and the record serves to clarify the identities of individuals mentioned in early church obituaries.
In Their Own Words
“The obituary in the Elders’ Journal states that Barrows died on 15 August, but his father’s later autobiography gives the date of 18 August. — Elders’ Journal, August 1838”
