Esther, separated from her wagon train and lost on the plains, feared for her life as she encountered an Indian camp while searching for her people. She fasted and prayed, and eventually, after wandering through the desert with John Rodney, they were guided to a buffalo skull with an inscription from Brigham Young, which led them to the camp of the Latter-day Saint pioneers. Upon hearing the pioneers singing and praying in their encampment, Esther was struck by their godliness and later expressed her conviction that their journey was divinely directed by God.

In Their Own Words

“The girl, who had roused like one electrically galvanized at his first words, gave alittle ery. ‘They are the Mormons,’ she half whispered. She said it with much the same feeling that she had exclaimed at sight of the Indians on the previous night. She was a Missourian, and had heard tales of the people represented by the name in the inscription, equaling in ferocity any she had heard of the red men. They were a people to be avoided if possible, and if met to be treated with the same craft and cruelty that one would mete to an Indian. ... ‘They cannot be Mormons—these are God-fearing people. I would trust my life with them implicitly.’ ... ‘I only know that band of true souls we have joined is God-directed, and whereever they ‘may go, our lot must be cast with them.’ — The Young Woman's Journal 13:7”
