Emma Awijcock, living in Tunbridge Wells, had suffered for years from rheumatic-gout, swollen limbs, heart trouble, and impaired memory, forcing her to travel with difficulty. After receiving the gospel, she prayed for the opportunity to be baptized. She traveled alone to London for her baptism on April 6th, and upon entering the water, she experienced no pain. Following the ordinance, her health was restored; she could wear shoes she hadn't worn in 20 years, her swelling subsided, her heart improved, and her memory was strengthened.
In Their Own Words
“I have been a great sufferer for many years from rheumatic-gout, and have been under the care of doctors for a long time, but received no permanent benefit. My limbs were so swollen that I could not walk without the aid of a stick, and then only with great difficulty. I also suffered from heart trouble and my memory was so impaired that I could not remember the simplest things. I heard of the Latter-day Saints and attended their meetings. I became convinced that they taught the truth, and I desired to be baptized. I lived at Tunbridge Wells, and had to travel to London to be baptized. I made the journey alone. On the day of baptism I entered the water without feeling the least pain and from the time I received that holy ordinance I have been improving in health. In dressing after baptism I put on a pair of shoes I had not been able to wear for twenty years. I am now well and strong. My bandages for my ankles I left off after baptism and have not worn them since. My breath is perfect and my heart does not trouble me, while my surplus flesh is wonderfully reduced. I am able to go up and down stairs as easily as any other person although I am fifty-eight years of age. I have no aches or pains and my memory has not only been strengthened but God has blessed me with a view of the gospel that exceeds anything I could imagine.”
