Emily Burrell, a mantle finisher in Castle Street, was discovered by housemates appearing dead, with a body that was cold and rigid. After a police constable trained in ambulance procedures intervened with hot-water bottles, she showed signs of life. She had been in a cataleptic state, during which she was fully aware of her surroundings, including police conversations about moving her to a mortuary, but was unable to move or speak until evening. She correctly identified a letter her husband had written, which the authorities had found in her room.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 61, No. 46, 16 November 1899, p. 735):
A remarkable case of suspended animation is reported from Castle Street, where a mantle finisher named Emily Burrell was found by her housemates in a state of apparent death. The body was cold and rigid, and to all appearances life was extinct. A police constable, who had been trained in ambulance work, was called in, and by the application of hot-water bottles and other restoratives, he succeeded in bringing her back to consciousness. It appears that the woman had been in a cataleptic state, and during the whole time she was perfectly conscious of what was going on around her. She heard the police discussing the advisability of removing her to the mortuary, but she was unable to move or speak until the evening. She was able to identify a letter which her husband had written to her, and which had been found in her room by the authorities.
In Their Own Words
“It then appeared that she had been lying in a kind of trance or cataleptic fit, during which she could hear what was going on around her, and that she had listened to the successive proposals to take her to the mortuary and to the infirmary with an agonised interest, but without the power to interpose. She repeated some of the conversation which had passed, and told the relicving officer that she was aware of his having searched the room for traces of any relatives who might be communicated with. She added, “You have a letter in your pocket from my husband, which you discovered in the drawer”; but she did not wish to have him communicated with, as he had been living apart from her for years, and was now in Wales. — Millennial Star 61:46”
