While lying in bed reflecting on the sacrifices required for the gospel, Elsie Marianne Fitz-Gerald heard sweet voices from the unseen world singing the hymn 'How firm a foundation'.
In Their Own Words
“As I lay upon my bed thinking of the many sacrifices I would have to make for the gospel's sake—the sacrifice of kindred and friends—and wondering how it would all come out, suddenly I heard in the stillness of the night sweet voices from the unseen world singing, "How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!" The following verse of this inspired hymn was sung three times: "Fear not, I am with thee; O, be not dismayed, For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand." The effect upon me was instantaneous. All my doubts and fears vanished, and a peace that passeth understanding filled my soul. I felt that I was not alone, and that the Lord was indeed with me, and would sustain me in every trial. I have never forgotten that night, and the sweet music has often cheered me when the way seemed dark and lonely.”
