Eliza Stoll Hayes, a member of the Church in London, was worried about the lack of funds to emigrate to Utah. She was promised by Elder James W. Paxman that if she paid her tithing, she would be able to go with the first company. She had a recurring dream three times, which the elders in the dream confirmed, urging her to pay her tithing. After finally paying her tithing and saving ten pounds, she went to the emigration office expecting to pay her fare, which was twelve pounds. Upon counting her money at the office, she discovered twelve pounds, having no explanation for the two extra sovereigns, which she attributed to the Lord. She was then able to sail with the first company and reached Salt Lake City in 1886.

In Their Own Words

“I was a member of the Church in London, and was very anxious to emigrate to Zion, but I had no means. I spoke to Elder James W. Paxman about it, and he told me that if I would pay my tithing I should go with the first company. I thought this was a very strange promise, as I had no money, but I felt impressed to do as he told me. I had a dream three times that I was in a meeting, and the Elders were there, and they told me to pay my tithing. I finally decided to do so, and I commenced to save my pennies and shillings until I had ten pounds. I then went to the emigration office, expecting to pay my fare, which was twelve pounds. I had no idea where the other two pounds were to come from, but I felt that the Lord would provide. On arriving at the emigration office I found a young lady in charge. I told her I had come to deposit some money towards my emigration, and she said she would receive it and give me a receipt for the amount. The reader can imagine my astonishment when I counted out to her the sum of twelve pounds. I could scarcely believe my eyes. I counted the money again, and, so enough, there were twelve pounds. Where the two extra sovereigns came from has remained a mystery with me to the present day. I attribute this remarkable thing to the Lord. I was enabled to sail with the first company, and arrived in Salt Lake City in the year 1886.”
