While serving as a lone missionary in Constantinople in 1885, Jacob Spori navigated a period of intense isolation and spiritual trial. Having arrived in Turkey after a difficult journey and a failed initial missionary placement with the deceptive Hagop Vartooquian, Spori lived in relative poverty and solitude, often relying on direct spiritual intervention to sustain his ministry. Before leaving his room one day, he received a distinct, urgent impression to kneel in prayer, sensing that an 'unlooked-for thing' might occur. Shortly after, a gentleman named Aristoteles, who had been waiting for Spori, approached him to challenge his faith with philosophical arguments. Though Spori initially felt unprepared, he recorded that the Spirit restored to his memory knowledge he had forgotten long ago, allowing him to defend his faith effectively. On another occasion, Spori felt a direct warning to decline an invitation to meet with students from a Scutari Institute, suspecting a trap. He later confirmed that the request was indeed a ruse orchestrated by local reverends intended to compromise him. Spori also experienced success through faith, including fasting and administering to the sick, which led to a miraculous recovery that caused 'veritable Turkish astonishment' and a visit from a baffled local doctor.
In Their Own Words
“I have had some very interesting experiences since I have been here. I have been alone for some time, and have had to rely entirely upon the Lord. One day, before leaving my room, I felt a strong impression to kneel down and pray, as I felt that some unlooked-for thing might happen. Shortly after, a gentleman named Aristoteles, who had been waiting for me, came to challenge my faith with philosophical arguments. I felt quite unprepared, but the Spirit of the Lord brought to my memory things I had forgotten long ago, and I was enabled to defend the truth in a way that surprised even myself. At another time, I felt a strong warning not to accept an invitation to meet with some students from the Scutari Institute, as I felt it was a trap. I afterwards learned that it was a ruse, planned by some local reverends, to get me into trouble. I have also had the privilege of administering to the sick, and through the blessing of the Lord, they have been restored to health, which has caused great astonishment among the people, and even a local doctor was quite baffled by the recovery.”
