An elder (the narrator) was invited to drink wine by an American man who was part of the group that shot Joseph Smith at Carthage. The elder discerned through the man's countenance that the wine was poisoned. The following day, the same man followed the elder's companion, fired his rifle, and later fired again from a stump when his first shot missed, but both shots missed the companion.

In Their Own Words

“I was in the city of Windgor, and while there I was invited by a man to take a drink of wine. I could see by the man’s countenance that he had done something wrong, so I told him that I should not drink the wine in the glass that he offered me, but if he would change glasses and give me the one that he was going to drink, I would drink it if he would drink the one he offered me. He refused to do this, and I felt satisfied that there was poison in the wine. I afterwards learned that this man was one of the party that shot Joseph Smith at Carthage. The next day my companion went to a farm house a few miles from the city, and I remained in the city. When he left the house this stranger followed him with his Minnie rifle, and when he got within a short distance of him, he said, “Here goes for the first one,” and fired; the bullet passed within a few inches of my comrade’s head. My companion turned round and looked at him, but did not say a word. The ruffian gave chase, and when he came to within about one hundred yards he took a rest on a stump and fired. But the bullet whistled near by and missed him. My companion then walked on, and the man did not follow him any further.”
