While visiting his relatives in Biggleswade, Elder Wm. Wagstaff was given the opportunity to answer many questions about the Church. He reported that he was divinely assisted by the Holy Spirit during this conversation, which lasted until nearly 10:00 p.m., preventing him from feeling any embarrassment despite the intense interest and questioning of those present.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
I attended the Calvinist meeting in the forenoon, and, of course, they wished to know how I liked the sermon and the minister. This gave me an opportunity to explain our doctrines, and in the evening, after tea time, I told them I would be pleased to answer any questions they wished to ask, and that was no small number. I conversed with them till nearly ten o’clock, and they were so very much interested in my remarks that one gentleman said he would like three or four such evenings, as he had never heard such sound arguments used, backed up by Scripture. I noticed he was quite affected; in fact, they all were. Another member of the family stated that had she known I was there she would certainly have been present. I must acknowledge that the Lord assisted me with His Holy Spirit, so that I did not feel in the least embarrassed.
