Elder William P. Payne, a missionary serving in London, was suffering from a health condition that made the climate unsuitable for him. Although he was advised to return home, he expressed faith in the power of prayer and healing. Through the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith, he was relieved from his sufferings in March 1889, allowing him to continue his missionary service for several months until his official release in August 1889.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 51, No. 36, p. 575):
I was suffering from a severe attack of inflammation of the lungs, and was advised by the doctor to return home, as the climate was unsuitable for me. I felt, however, that I had not finished my mission, and through the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith, I was relieved from my sufferings, and have been able to continue my labors until the present time.
In Their Own Words
“I strongly advised his release last March, but he insisted upon remaining, having faith that the Lord would bless him, and through the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith he was relieved from his sufferings at that time; but this climate is too severe for his constitution, and it will be unsafe for him to remain in this land any longer. — Millennial Star 51:36”
